Escape to Live
Published in Paperback by Grosvenor Books USA (June, 1984)
Author: Howell
Average review score:

A soldier's incredible true story of escape during WWII.
This is a book to read when you believe your life cannot get any worse. Mr. Howell's true account of his escape from a POW camp in Greece during WWII is both unbelievable and inspiring. The prose is strangely amateur, yet appealing, even when Howell dwells on his newfound God and unshakable faith. Howell chronicles the events that led up to his capture as well as his grueling imprisonment and daring escape. The reader feels as if s/he is there with him, and skin crawls uncontrollably when he tells of his festering wounds, bedbugs, and wasted physical condition.

Whether you are religious or not (and I happen not to be) this story is as inspiring as a book of such brevity can be. I have been to Greece on two occasions, and his descriptions of the Greek people and countryside could not be more accurate and touching. Furthermore, my mother has met this man, and he is truly a remarkable individual. This is a great little book to keep around when life seems to be assaulting you from all sides. You will come away with a new appreciation for what you have.

Be thankful!
Great message to teach children any time of year! The only problem - the book we bought didn't have page numbers, so my son didn't know where to put the corresponding stickers.

From Moonshine to Madison Avenue : A Cultural History of the NASCAR Winston Cup Series
Published in Paperback by Popular Press (August, 1997)
Author: Mark D. Howell

From Moonshine to Madison Ave
This is an excellent book. I needed a book that looked at NASCAR in a sociological point of view and this was the answer to my prayer. It gives a very good description of the history of NASCAR Winston Cup. If you are looking for a book about NASCAR Winston Cup Series and its history, then I strongly recommend this one. Enjoy reading.

Harukor: An Ainu Woman's Tale (Voices from Asia)
Published in Hardcover by University of California Press (02 March, 2000)
Authors: Katsuichi Honda, Kyoko Selden, David L. Howell, and Honda Katsuichi
Average review score:

A good introduction to Ainu culture
Harukor is a good introduction to Ainu culture that does a credible job of presenting Ainu culture as a culture both like and unlike others, without sentimentalizing the Ainu or depicting them as primitive.

The introduction is particularly good as a general overview to Ainu culture a(s far as it can be reconstructed) for the period ending in the late 17th century when the Ainu were increasingly subjugated to the expansive Japanese presence.

The biggest weakness of the volume is that it tries to serve two purposes: the first is to present an Ainu tale as an Ainu would tell it; the second is to make the Ainu culture more accessible to non-Ainu. Unfortunately these two goals are some times contradictory and Honda makes a number of digressions and explanations that someone living the traditional Ainu lifestyle would not feel the need to makel while these are needed for the tale to be understandable to modern readers, the effect is to render the actual tale somewhat uneven and cumbersome.

The above flaw is somewhat offset by the quality of the writing and general and the very natural-feeling English translation.

I highly recommend this book for those somewhat curious about the Ainu who are also looking for something easier to read than the volumes of scholarly material available. Even for those familiar with the scholarly material Harukor does a good job of putting a more personal face on Ainu culture.

While the volume is not perfect, it is the only volume of its sort that I know of and is worth the price.

Mackinac Passages: A Summer Adventure
Published in Paperback by Thunder Bay Press (June, 1995)
Authors: Robert S. Lytle, Robert A. Lytle, and Karen Howell
Average review score:

Fun summer reading for lovers of Northern Michigan
I enjoyed this book alot, even though I am far beyond the target age for this book. It brought back fond memories of summers spent at our cottage in Northern Michigan. My summers weren't near as eventful as it was for the kids in Robert Lytles Mackinac Passage novels. I reccomend the entire series (so far numbering 3) to folks of all ages who just want to be taken to a simpler time and place. It was great.

Naked in Church
Published in Paperback by Writers Club Press (January, 2003)
Author: John W. Howell
Average review score:

naked truth
I would have to say that I enjoyed the characters most of all in Naked in Church. They were all extremely well developed and multidimensional, so much that they seem real because they are all a little bit [messed] up. I had a difficult time putting the book down because I wanted to know what was going to happen next in their lives. I was a little disappointed when it ended because I was left wanting more. Overall, I would say that I definitely enjoyed this book.

On Final Approach: The Women Airforce Service Pilots of W.W.II
Published in Hardcover by Falconer Pub (August, 1991)
Authors: Byrd Howell Granger, Jeana Yeager, and Claudia M. Oakes
Average review score:

The Lowdown on Getting Women into the Wild Blue Yonder
(by E.M. Singer, author of "Mother Flies Hurricanes")This thoroughly researched, extremely detailed, and meticulously documented history of the WASPs is well organized, vividly written, and highly opinionated: The author, a former WASP, is lavish in her praise of WASP founder Jacqueline Cochran and scathing in her condemnation of Jackie's adversaries--and there were many. Jackie was an uppity woman who didn't flinch at stepping on toes to get the best for her woman pilots, and back in the '40s such unladylike behavior didn't sit well with the establishment. Granger chronicles Cochran's tireless efforts to get the WASP program up and running, along with a blow-by-blow account of her battles with the Army Air Force brass over everything from where to locate training facilities to how often her pilots were to be subjected to medical examinations to the appointment of her office staff. No doubt about it, this woman was a fighter! In my opinion, these guys couldn't recognize talent when they saw it-they should have turned Jackie on the Germans. She would have whupped the Wehrmacht, hanged all the Nazi war criminals, and gotten every American boy back home by Christmas of '44. ...

Review and Self Assessment to Accompany Emergency Medicine
Published in Paperback by W B Saunders (June, 1999)
Authors: John M. Howell, Judith Linden, Donald Barton, Sheree Givre, and Judy Fletcher
Average review score:

Companion piece to the textbook.
As an emergency medicine resident, I am reading this text as part of the program. The review book is laid out in the same way as the texts. The questions are all referenced in the Howell text with appropriate discussion. The questions are overwhelmingly in the single best answer format. There is a high proportion of questions in the negative (all are true except). The questions go over the major parts of the chapter. Anyone using this text for reading will benefit from the review offered by this book.
